Bring your earplugs to rummage through trash
Across the street from my office building is a constructions site. Actually, there are construction sites all around my office building, but this particular one is across the street. Anyway, there are three stray dogs who claim this construction site as their playground. Their favorite game is “bark non-stop and chase cars”. They do it with such aggressiveness that I am amazed they are still alive. Every once and a while one of them is hobbling around on a sore leg – the result I’m sure of miscalculating the angles and rate of speed between itself and a speeding car.
Beside the construction site is a large trash pit which is generally avoided. However, in a recent trip past the construction site there was a Roma woman digging through the trash pile looking for items of interest. Surrounding her were the three stray dogs barking as fast and as loud as they possibly could. The dogs never touched the woman, but were clearly upset at her rummaging through the trash pile. Occasionally the old woman would look up and try to bat the dogs away with a branch or something. This would only cause the dogs to turn their barking volume “up to 11″ for a few seconds. As the woman moved through the trash pile the dogs would maintain the “perimeter of noise” around her. Unfortunately I was unable to see the conclusion as I had to get to work, but I’m sure it involved a lot of barking.
